Coming from closed adoptions, we know what it is like to wonder about your birthparents. We support having a fully open adoption, so that our child knows all the people in their life who love them.

Lena and Mom visit her
adoption agency in Washington, DC

Lena: My brother and I were both adopted as infants. My parents always encouraged us to search for our birthparents. I was able to learn that they were Filipino pediatricians doing their medical residencies when I was born. Although I located my birthfather, he never responded to letters that I sent. I haven’t found my birthmother yet, but haven't given up the search.

Sean and birthmother Mary

Sean: My twin sisters and I were adopted at birth, and knew little of our histories. When I was 21, my birthmother, Mary, actually hired a private investigator and found me! We keep in touch by regular phone calls and visits; Claire loves having another grandma. Mary is definitely an important member of our family!
